We all know that statistic about how moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do in life. In my early twenties, when moving house with a few boxes of books and a bag of clothes, I didn’t understand the problem. Now I have S – and a 2-bedroom house – I totally get it.
That said, there are a few things you can do to ease the strain when it comes to moving house. Here are a few tips to help you to have a stress-free house move:
Declutter as you pack
Be as ruthless as you can bear to be when it comes to decluttering. Getting rid of the things you don’t really need and never really liked means you don’t waste time packing and unpacking them. As you’re packing, go through each room and get rid of as much as you can. This means you’ll have less to transport and less to unpack at the other end!
Hire a reliable removal company
When S was 2 we moved house without a removal company. A few friends came to help move boxes, and another friend came with a van to move the large furniture. It was the most stressful, horrific day of my life and took way longer than it should have. The next time we moved we still had friends come and help, but I hired a removal company to do the bulk of the moving. It was so much easier! If you’re in Calgary long distance moving can be particularly stressful so a reliable removal company will really take some of that pressure off.
Book your TV/internet connection early
These days, we rely on a good wifi connection, and many of us also use a TV service above and beyond what comes through a normal aerial. Moving into a new home can mean waiting a long while for an engineer to come out and connect you to the world again. For me, as someone who works from home, I found this particularly stressful as it meant I had to go and find a cafe to work from each day. Give your provider as much notice as possible that you’ll be moving, and they should be able to make an appointment closer to your moving date.
Pack a moving day survival kit
Think about the things you will need to be able to get to, not only on moving day but the day after too. Things like the kettle and mugs are useful, but also – what will you eat for dinner, or for breakfast the next day? As well as this, an overnight bag with things like toiletries and pyjamas can prove really useful and mean that if you are worn out from moving boxes, you won’t need to unpack lots before you can go to sleep.
Unpack as soon as possible
Once you’ve got all the boxes and furniture into your new house, you can breathe a sigh of relief – but don’t leave the unpacking too long! It can be exhausting to keep unpacking what feels like endless boxes – but if you leave them until you’re in the mood, you may well find yourself in a position where you need to find something but it’s at the bottom of a box! Keep the momentum going and unpack as much as you can, as soon as you can.
