When it’s pouring with rain, it can limit your options when it comes to entertaining the kids. It can lead to them feeling bored and you being stressed, which could be a recipe for disaster. Thankfully, there are loads of things you can do around the house to keep everyone occupied and let you spend a bit of time together.

Here are 6 rainy day activities the whole family can enjoy.

Do some puzzles

Puzzles come in a variety of sizes and are widely available for children and adults of all ages. There are loads of designs to choose from, and they can keep kids occupied for hours. So, if you don’t already have any at home, it’s worth buying a few. If you don’t like the idea of using your dining table, you can always buy a puzzle mat that allows your puzzles to be rolled up and stored away until they are next needed.

Look through old photographs

You might be surprised at how enjoyable kids find looking through old photographs. It’s a lovely way for them to find out about their extended families and hear lots of stories about your childhood. You can also create your own video collage of all the fond memories and watch it together with your family on such days. Sharing memories and experiences with your family can be emotionally rewarding, so the next time it’s raining, fish out your albums and recount some of your favorite memories.

Have fun with chemistry

If you fancy doing something a little more adventurous, why not do some chemical reaction experiments? Let the kids try their hand at making candy cane ornaments with sugar crystals, or grab some food coloring and water and do a density experiment? If your kids are eager to take things a step further, there’s a wide range of scientific experiment kits available to purchase online that are sure to create lots of interest and amazement.

Play a board game

Most households will have at least one board lurking in a closet somewhere so, the next time it’s raining, sit down, relax, and play a family game together. Monopoly and Cluedo are two of the most popular board games, but there are loads of options to choose from regardless of the age of your kids. Family fun on a wet Sunday afternoon doesn’t get much better than this.

Play a game online

Online games are a great way of entertaining yourself when it’s raining outside. There are games for both adults and children, and while it’s not advisable to spend all day playing, a little time here and there will do no harm.

Watch a movie

If you are looking for an easy attention grabber, you can go wrong with a bucket of popcorn and a good movie. Gone are the days when you need to hire a DVD or run to the video store. Choose from one of the many online services available and download a family film of your choice. If you can’t decide which to go for, websites like Rotten Tomatoes offer great movie reviews and should help to narrow things down a little.

Go for a walk

With some planning, you should have no trouble occupying your kids when it’s raining. However, if all else fails, put on their wellies and take them out for a walk. The excitement of jumping around in puddles should never be underestimated!
