Whether you’re moving your home or your business, it can be incredibly stressful.

Here are some tips to help things go more smoothly:

Pack well

It can be tempting to jus shove things into boxes and tell yourself you will sort it at the other end. We all know that when you get to the other end, unpacking several boxes of random junk is the last thing you’ll want to do! Better to put some time into organised packing before you move; this will make the unpacking so much easier.

If you’re leasing – read the fine print!

This is especially important when dealing with a business move. You need to know what you can and can’t do with things like decorating, fixtures and fittings and even the type of business you can conduct on the premises. Your landlord may have specific stipulations you must stick to or risk being evicted from your property. Click here to read about how a commercial real estate lawyer can help.

Have one box of essential items

If you can’t function without a cup of coffee in the mornings, the last thing you want is to have to open seven boxes maked “kitchen” before you can find the kettle – and then to rummage through another three before you find the mugs. Create a list of essential items that you will need before everything else is unpacked. Put all of these things into one box, and mark it with “open me first” so that you can easily find the things you need.

Hire professional movers

It can be tempting to save money by getting friends and family to help you move – but it’s so much easier to hire in professionals. They can get the job done quickly and more smoothly – and if something is accidentally broken en route, they have insurance to cover that. If your friends and family want to help, get them to help with the organising or unpacking at the other end. Pay for mail redirection

Seriously, redirecting your mail for an extended period of time is so much easier than trying to make sure you’ve covered every single company and relative before the move goes ahead. The last time we moved I paid for a year of mail redirection, which meant I could pick up on any companies that sent things out infrequently, and change my details with them at my leisure

If you’re moving long distance, relax along the way

Moving, whether it’s a house or an office move, is stressful – especially if you’re moving a long distance and need to have everything done in one go. If you’re hiring a removal company you’ll have more time and space to chill out, so make the most of it. Remember that once you arrive at the other end it will be all systems go, with boxes everywhere and a million things to sort out. I am a firm believer that these things are easier if you’re feeling more relaxed, so it can be worth looking at something to do either on moving day or the day after to help you celebrate and relax. Hire professional cleaners

Even the most clean and tidy of people can find that once they empty their space, there’s a mess of dust and cobwebs left behind. I always find that by the time I’ve packed everything and finally emptied the place, the last thing I want to do is come back with a vacuum cleaner and duster! Take the pressure off by arranging for a professional cleaning company to come in and give the place a once over when you’ve left. It makes things so much less stressful!
