Reading is one of the four macro skills every child needs to master as they progress towards higher levels of learning. Even long before a child reaches the 1st grade, he or she needs to be equipped with proper comprehension skills in order to perform various academic tasks.

Kids Academy is geared towards helping your child improve his or her reading comprehension skills through these preschool pdf reading worksheets collection. Our team did some digging and talked to experienced education professionals to help us come up with these expert tips to improve reading comprehension:

Reading aloud. Reading aloud is a long tested strategy in improving reading comprehension. By doing so, the reader hears his / her own voice thus, providing an opportunity to improve pronunciation. Being mindful on the correct pronunciation of words forces the reader to slow down at an effective pace just enough for the mind to understand what’s being read.

Providing appropriate reading materials. Improving reading comprehension is also about building the right cognitive foundation. There are different groups and lengths of words that are appropriate for the reader’s age. When refining such skills, it is imperative to provide the reading materials appropriate for the reader’s age or academic level. Your toddler can also watch and listen to preschooler educational videos. They will help him improve his understanding of the language as well as reading.

Fluency is the key. Bear in mind that comprehension is all about being able to grasp the message of the texts or at least the meaning of the words. Through consistent exercises, a child is able to build his or her reading fluency.

Fluent readers are capable of immediately recognizing words at a significant pace. With such skill, the reader can now focus more on getting the idea of the sentence rather than on decoding each word.

Establish parent-teacher cooperation. Improving the academic skills of the student is a task shared by the parent and the teacher. Both work hand-in-hand to observe and apply various pedagogical strategies from the school to the home of the learner. Open communication between the parent and the teacher must be established in order for the latter to come up with the most appropriate techniques in furthering reading comprehension skills of the student.

Follow through with their lessons. As a parent and your child’s primary teacher, it is important that you gain actual knowledge on the course of their lessons. In your free time, initiate academic follow-ups through supplemental readings relevant to your child’s current lessons. This will help your child gain and become familiar with additional terms prior to engaging further lessons in their class.

Throw follow-up questions. After reading, throw a couple of follow-up questions to help your child understand the message embedded in the story. Make sure your questions focus on the main elements such as the characters, plot, and the theme. In most cases, asking questions before, during, and after reading yields better results. Initial questions fires up the interest of the reader. Questions raised halfway enhance the reader’s ability to use his imagination while concluding questions sum up and enforce his overall comprehension of the story.
