Of all the aspects of your child’s health that you try to see to on a daily basis, their eye health might very well be one of the things that falls through the cracks. Unfortunately, it is easy to take eye health in general for granted and to allow poor habits to continue unchecked when it comes to the manner in which your child looks after their eyes.

That being said, your child’s eye health should be among your top priorities. With an overabundance of screens surrounding them at all hours of the day and the prospect of developing an eye condition undetected, it is important to keep a check on your child’s vision.

Thankfully, this task does not have to be overly complicated. In fact, there are a few simple things that you can do in order to help look after your child’s eyes as they grow. From developing healthy eye-care habits to routine checkups, you can help your child learn just how important it is to take care of their vision.

Here are three ways in which you can help your child learn to protect the health of their eyes for years to come.

1. Routine Checkups

First and foremost, it is crucial that you take your child in for routine checkups with a family-friendly optometrist. Not only will such checkups help detect any changes in vision that your child might experience, but they can also allow a qualified professional to look for any signs of a developing eye conditions and general eye health.

There are some common eye conditions that children tend to experience. From eye strain to a blocked tear duct, your optometrist will be able to diagnose and help correct certain conditions that your child may be developing. Even if your child is not complaining about blurry vision, routine eye exams are essential for overall eye health.

2. Limiting Screen Time

It is no secret that the blue light that is emitted by screens can put a strain on your eyes. With screens playing such an important role in most people’s lives these days, it is hard to escape that strain for too long. However, when it comes to your child’s eye health, it is important to make sure that you put a few limitations on screen time.

For starters, you should encourage your child to put all screens away for at least an hour, if not two, before bedtime. This will allow their eyes time to relax so that they are comfortable for sleep. You can also get glasses which filter out blue-light waves, making computer use more comfortable.

3. Diet

One aspect of your child’s eye health that overlaps with their overall health and wellbeing involves their diet. There are certain foods that promote eye health, particularly those that contain omega-3 fatty acids.

Furthermore, there are certainly foods that can have negative effects on eye health such as junk foods that contain dehydrating salts and unhealthy fats. Encourage a healthy diet with plenty of water in order to help promote your child’s eye health long term.
