Not too long ago, you went through a pretty rough breakup. You’ve spent the past several months getting over your old flame and, although you’re a bit nervous about doing so, you now feel ready to get back into the dating game.
To make this experience as positive and successful as possible, keep the following do’s and don’ts in mind as you start dating again:
Do: Be Interested in What the Person is Saying
When going out on a first date, you will probably hear a lot of new-to-you things about this potential new love interest. Granted, not everything you glean about this person will be fascinating, but make sure to show interest and make an effort to listen. Additionally, ask follow-up questions and engage your date in conversation. Who knows? You may find he or she is a great conversationalist and that you have a great deal in common.
Don’t: Take Over the Conversation
While you should never just sit there silently as your date opens up about his or her work, interests and hobbies, you also shouldn’t feel the need to control the entire conversation on the first date. Think about it this way: if you end up really liking the person, there will be plenty of time for more conversation where you can talk more about yourself.
Do: Pamper Yourself
To help get your mojo back, treat yourself to some serious pampering to feel more relaxed and rejuvenated. This will also help you feel more confident during that first date. Now, if it’s been a while since you’ve last styled your hair, consider a visit to a salon or spring for a new outfit or two that you can wear on your date. Additionally, never underestimate the power of what you wear under your clothes. As such, splurge a bit on a new bra and panty set that makes you feel sexy, desirable and totally ready to jump back into the dating world.
Don’t: Talk Endlessly About Your Ex
This is a classic golden rule situation. Would you like it if your date talked constantly about his ex and how amazing and/or awful she was? Probably not. Keep this tip in mind as you get back into the dating scene and strive to avoid chatting too much about any former love. A quick mention here and there is appropriate, but you don’t need to go into great detail about past relationships, especially on a first date.
Do: Be Yourself
This advice applies to every aspect of dating, from setting up an honest online dating profile to what you say and do while out with a potential new partner. Be true to yourself and what you stand for; not only will this help you to honor yourself and your values, but it will also give the other person a true look into who you are as a person. Remember, any attempt to act as or be someone you’re not will almost always come back to bite you in the behind. In other words, stick with being honest and forthcoming and you’ll do just fine.
Back in the Saddle Again
Getting back in the dating game can definitely give anyone a good case of butterflies. Still, know that you’re a good and desirable catch worthy of love and affection who has what it takes to take the plunge. By keeping these do’s and don’ts in mind, dating again after a rough breakup should go smoothly and be a more positive experience.
