Exposing your child to an art education is essential to their intellectual and emotional development. When kids’ senses explore the sights, sounds, and smells, including different textures around them, they begin to learn how to notice beauty or “aesthetics.”

Children begin to appreciate the beauty found everywhere. In this article, let’s explore the top reasons your child should create art.

What Young Children Need to Make Art

A common question is, “What will they create?”. Parents and teachers can encourage kids to use ideas from: dreams, wishes, or interests. You can also ask kids to think about significant people, things or places that made an impression on them.

Children need to be encouraged to create art in different media. Making collages is an example of a fun, art activity. Aside from crayons and a sketchpad, you can use everyday materials like cardboard, paper plates, or egg trays, etc. This can help them be resourceful. Use anything that can be glued, pasted, taped or stapled.

3 Reasons Why Your Child Should Be Creating Art

Aside from polishing fine motor skills, and developing a keen sense of observation, children also acquire the following benefits while making art:

1. Teaches Positive Skills Such as Self-Expression

Learning to communicate in various ways is a highly valuable life skill that every child needs to know. Expressing themselves through art enables any child to say what they think and feel, in a safe, accepting environment. Children who know how to safely express themselves, in turn, feel empowered and open to learning opportunities.

2. Art Builds Character

While art is mainly about developing creativity, it is also a way for your child to build resourcefulness and other character-building skills. They learn to develop patience as they start a project and bring it to completion. Kids can begin to persevere as they finish a task, no matter how long it may take.

3. Promotes Critical Thinking Stills

When children study about art and how to make it, they can discover other kinds of artistic styles and genres. As kids study the different elements of art, they also develop critical thinking skills that can benefit them later in life.

While creating art, children can know about art history and the different elements that make up a masterpiece. As they learn about lines and forms, they will also learn how to critique art. When your children make art and learn how to critique other artworks, they develop insight and their own opinions.

How will children learn to create art?

There are two learning approaches that let children learn about art:

1. The Discipline-Based Art Education Approach (DBAE)

Art education in schools usually includes the following learning activities:

  • making art
  • art history
  • aesthetics
  • art criticism

2. The Studio-Based Approach

Other art teachers use a child-centered approach:

  • sensing and experiencing
  • learning about artists and their styles
  • aesthetics

This learning approach does not usually include art history, especially for young children.

Wrapping up

Young kids need to experience art through their senses. Through art, they can learn to express themselves, acquire character-building skills, and develop critical thinking. To allow them to create, provide them with the right materials, time and space to create their art projects.
