Ever wondered why some mums wear a scarf? It’s not because they like to look perfectly accessorised at all times (although that does help). The scarf is a critical part of any mother’s toolbox; it is pretty, functional and oh-so versatile. Don’t ever be fooled into thinking that a woman has enough scarves; there is no such thing. In fact, if you are ever stuck for inspiration, a scarf makes the perfect gift for women who appear to have everything. We take a look at some of our favourite practical and innovative uses for the humble scarf.

The blanket. This one is obvious. Impromptu picnic? Take a seat on the scarf. Baby fallen asleep? A scarf will keep them snug. A wide cotton scarf is your picnic blanket, sarong, coverup and baby changing mat all in one.

The feeding aid. When it comes to feeding, you and your baby take priority. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks or says; in fact, companies can get into a lot of trouble for failing to support breastfeeding mothers. However, we all know that feeding can be daunting, particularly if you have a new baby and you are a first-time mother. Step up the scarf. Your scarf will be your best friend and you won’t want to leave home without it. Tuck the scarf into your bra strap and drape it diagonally across your body to feed baby comfortably and discreetly.

The handkerchief. We don’t need to elaborate: most mums are guilty of using their scarf to clean noses, wipe vomit, clear away tears; the great thing is that a cotton scarf is lightweight and washes and dries easily.

The shade. Too much sun? Cover delicate skin with a scarf, which offers protection from the sun without causing overheating. Need to eliminate distractions so that your baby or toddler can sleep in the buggy? A lightweight scarf is a perfect way of providing blackout on the go. (just be careful to allow for plenty of ventilation in your makeshift shelter to prevent baby from overheating).

The Audrey. Bad hair day? Tired? Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn, conceal those unruly locks with a scarf and hide those eye bags with a pair of sunglasses and switch tired mum for glamour puss in two easy moves.

The comforter. Your scarf will be all things to all people, but for busy, tired mums, it can be a huge comfort. It is your camouflage; it is your cover up. It hides that toothpaste stain that you didn’t notice until you left the house. It adds a splash of colour to your outfit, even when you feel totally washed out. Your scarf is your treat, your disguise, your barrier against the rest of the world. So, treat yourself or the mum in your life to an indulgent scarf that will promise to bring you comfort no matter what.
