I think it’s safe to say that many people find themselves daydreaming of vacation, but it isn’t always possible to actually go on holiday, whether for financial or scheduling reasons. It can be all too easy to push back going on vacation, especially as most times there are many other things that are a priority. But it is important to go on holiday, even on small short trips for a weekend getaway especially when you have kids.

Holidays can have a very positive impact on kids and provide a beautiful opportunity for your family to create new memories and bond together outside of your usual environment. A vacation is time for play, laughter, exploration, adventure, and a collection of special moments and experiences. So while your kids have smiles on their faces and be storing away these special family memories, they’ll also be developing their brains via new interactions and stimuli.

Here are 3 spots that are perfect for a family getaway:

Sicily

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is full of charm, character, and authenticity. I love that while you can plan for an extravagant and luxurious holiday in Sicily, you can also have a lovely holiday at an affordable price. It has always been a dream of mine to rent an apartment in Sicily with a sea view, and luckily websites like WishSicily have good deals for this type of accommodation. I know that my daughter would love to play on the seaside, see a traditional puppet show in Syracuse, and take a cable car up Mount Etna for both the ride and for the views. It’s also an ideal destination for adults, as you are rewarded with gorgeous views at every turn, incredible food, and a welcoming and friendly culture.

Croatia

Croatia has become more and more of a tourist destination in recent years. To name a couple standout characteristics and family-friendly activities, there are: clear blue waters, waterfalls, kid-friendly caves such as Biserujka Cave in Krk and Festinsko Kraljevstvo in Zminj, and Sibenik’s two weeks long International Children’s Festival every June where children can meet other kids, expand their cultural awareness and spend time doing set fun-filled activities.

Cornwall

If you are in the UK and are looking for domestic travel, Cornwall is a well-loved destination for family travel. There are sandy beaches, comfortable temperatures, and plenty to do no matter what the weather brings. There are castles to explore, surf and sailing lessons, swimming spots and 500km of coastline that you can wander down to find your ideal spot. As this is a popular destination for family travel so there are many family-friendly accommodation spots, and many are even pet-friendly if you want to bring your furry friend, as well.

With my daughter, I have made it a priority to save up for a family getaway and experiences rather than on temporary things such as (extra) toys that she will get bored of quickly. After all, some of our favorite memories together are of exploring together, even to nearby towns.

What are some of your favorite spots for a family getaway?
