As a mom, your life is busy, to say the least. It’s all too easy to get caught up in living your life for other people – your kids, your spouse, your family, your friends, your job – and to forget about taking some time to recharge your own batteries. But it’s so important to make time for self-care, and your own needs.

Here are four reasons why it’s important to spend time alone to recharge.

Alone time allows you to recharge mentally

When you are stretched in a million different directions, your brain runs on overdrive, all the time. And while you may think that constantly being “on” would increase mental sharpness and capacity, in fact, this constant state of work is draining to your most valuable resource: your mind! By taking some time alone without distractions, you get “the chance to clear your mind, focus, and think more clearly,” according to Psychology Today. When you take time alone, your brain benefits, which then positively impacts your body and your physical and mental health.

Alone time can make you more productive

When you separate yourself from distraction and disruptions, you’re able to focus more easily, and prioritize your most important tasks. When you spend time alone, your productivity and output levels increase dramatically.

In fact, according to Forbes, even though open-plan office layouts have become more and more popular in the workplace, and help to “facilitate communication and interaction between co-workers,” they actually are counterproductive. By embracing solitude, you’ll be able to shut out unhelpful noise, gain privacy, and focus on your most important tasks. And then completing these tasks will help you feel accomplished and fulfilled!

Alone time can replenish creativity

While it’s great to spend time engaging with other people, constantly entertaining others makes you tired. Especially depending on whether you are naturally introverted or extraverted, spending time around others can be incredible training to some personality types. If you work in any sort of creative field, being alone can be great for replenishing your creativity. If you’re run down and tired (or just distracted by others), it’s hard to get in your creative flow. Rejuvenate your creativity by spending some time alone, and doing things that inspire you, such as reading, writing, journaling, or sketching. Whatever works for you, set aside some time for you to be alone, and get your creative juices flowing.

Alone time helps you listen to your gut

On a day-to-day basis, you probably encounter dozens, if not hundreds of other people, all with their own unique opinions and ideas. And when you spend your time surrounded by others, you can easily lose track of your own unique thoughts, opinions, feelings and intuition. This is confusing, and stressful, if not only on a subconscious level.

It’s important to spend time alone to reconnect with your unique sense of self, and to get to know yourself better – which is so important! So the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or drained, take some time alone. Practice some yoga or meditation, go for a long walk, or get in a reliable sedan and go for a drive. Don’t feel guilty about taking this time for yourself – your responsibilities and tasks will be there when you get back!
