Why visit South Africa?

South Africa is five times bigger than the UK, with a vast diversity of geography and wildlife. With so much to do there, where do you start?

Here are 5 essential things to do in South Africa

1 South African Safari

There are several game reserves in South Africa, offering the unique opportunity to see wildlife roaming freely in their natural habitats alongside each other. South Africa offers the best value safari experiences on the continent and people travel there from all over the world just to visit the game reserves.

2 Go surfing

South Africa has 1600 miles of coastline, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean. Both have some great spots for surfing, but those in Cape Town are perhaps the most famous and popular – and with good reason. If you’re more of a beginner, you may find the waves more accommodating in Durban or perhaps at Jeffreys Bay, 50km south of Port Elizabeth often called South Africa’s surfing capital

3 Visit Robben Island

Robben Island was the prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years and now one of South Africa’s most important political sites. It was turned into a museum in 1997, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999; it’s an important symbol of the triumph of democracy over apartheid. Tours are led by ex prisoners who can provide real-life accounts of what went on in the prison.

4 Swim with sharks

Great white sharks are drawn to the Cape because it’s the home of Cape fur seals, and there are now several companies offering cage-diving where you can go underwater and get up close and personal with the world’s greatest predator in their natural environment without fearing for your own life. At Aliwal Shoal just south of Durban is a Marine Protected Area where you can swim without a cage, with oceanic blacktip sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks.

5 Visit the Cradle of Humankind

If you are even vaguely interested in history, this is a must-see. One of eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa, this is a series of caves where a 2.3 million year old fossil was found in 1947. In fact, the Sterkfontein caves are where more than a third of all early hominid fossils were ever discovered before 2010 – hence its name. Some of the fossils date back as far as 3.5 million years.

Travelling between destinations in South Africa

In a country with a land mass five times the size of the UK, it makes sense to fly between destinations. Whether you’re starting out in Cape Town or Johannesburg, you’ll want to get from one side of the country to the other at some point. When taking domestic flights it is always worth using an airline local to the country you are in. As well as being more affordable, it allows you to really experience the country you’re visiting.

Kulua Airlines is one of South Africa’s most popular low cost airlines. Part of a company called Comair who run Kulula and British Airways in South Africa. Kulua flights are inexpensive yet comfortable, safe and secure and Kulua Airlines are one of the most successful airlines in South Africa.
