One of the biggest problems with any kind of mental health issue is that we often can’t bear to leave the house in order to get help. Some days we just can’t face going out of the front door, and so it can be hard to get any sort of help.

There are plenty of ways to help oneself without leaving home though, especially in the modern age of the internet.

Here are 5 ways to help yourself with mental illness, without leaving the house:

1. Read self help books

I have posted previously about the books I read when I was going through a nervous breakdown; there are hundreds of books out there that can help not only with mental illness but also maintaining mental wellness

2. Reach out on social media

Social media has often been vilified as something that exacerbates and can even cause mental health problems. However, the reverse can also be true. Often when we reach out on social media our friends are only too eager to help however they can.

3. Move!

No matter how much we don’t feel like it or want to do it, exercising does help with depression. It’s a fact you can’t really dispute, even if you really can’t face it. If you can’t face going out of the house to exercise, find something to do inside the house. Even walking briskly up and down the stairs a few times can really help to get the blood flowing. If you have a mini trampoline (or you have children with a large one in the garden) have a go on that for a while. It will help.

4. Speak to a psychologist online

If we can have video conferences with people in three different countries, or chat to friends on the other side of the world, why shouldn’t we use the internet to talk to a psychologist? Often the hardest part of going to see a psychologist is… going to see a psychologist. If you remove the part where you have to leave the house, it doesn’t feel so bad.

5. Eat your greens

Another one that we rarely want to deal with when we’re feeling rubbish; often when you feel awful you don’t want to prepare and eat a healthy meal. Mostly, you want carbs and cheesy things (or is that just me). But again, the fact remains that a healthy, balanced diet can help with our mental health. Getting enough vitamins and minerals helps to keep your brain working well, and it’s also worth nothing that a large percentage of the serotonin produced in the body, is produced in the gut – not in the brain. So eating more healthy food, whilst boring and mundane, is a thing.
