We all love cake, right? Personally I am a big fan of cake I don’t have to make myself. Especially cake that’s delivered.

Regular followers of this blog may remember that back in June, S ended up in hospital. We had several weeks of worry and hospital tests and then earlier this month we were finally told that she’s absolutely fine. It was such a relief, once the news had sunk in we felt it was cause for a mini celebration. Time to order a cake, then!

We got our cake from bakerdays, who make letterbox cakes like this, as well as larger personalised cakes, personalised cupcakes, and even personalised balloons to go with them! I chose a vanilla sponge for S, but you can also get chocolate chip cake, lemon drizzle, half vanilla half chocolate – and even dairy free and wheat free options.

We began our celebration with some bubbles, because – well, why not! We do love bubbles in our house! S doesn’t really understand much of what’s gone on over the last few months, just that she’s had to go to the hospital a fair bit – but she does understand that when we left the hospital the last time, it was with a smile. She knows there is cause for celebration!

I’ll admit I was a little dubious of cake that comes through the letterbox; I thought there was no way a cake through the post would taste as good as one from the shelf in the supermarket or the local baker’s. What I hadn’t thought of though is that the cakes on the shelf in the supermarket have been there at least a couple of days when you buy them, and so have the ones at the baker’s too usually. When you order a cake from bakerdays it is made and sent the same day (when you order before 2pm), and arrives with you the next day in a protective box. The cake we received was delicious and S was really pleased with it. (So was I; it didn’t last long!)

The letterbox cake we received was just perfect for the two of us to share over a couple of days. The cakes come in a handy tin which means you don’t have to eat them all in one go and can keep them fresh for a little while afterwards.

In conclusion, I would definitely recommend a letterbox cake for a celebration. You can personalise an existing cake design on the site, or you can upload a photo or make use of their cake design service.

I think this sort of thing is a great idea for things like birthdays, but also because you can send one through the post, they’re great for something like a graduation, exam results – or the rather specific celebration of “hooray, no more hospital visits for us” that we used our cake for!
