How You Can Stay Safe on the Roads In Winter

In adverse weather conditions, the risk of being involved in a road traffic accident is increased. Staying safe on the roads in winter should always be a high priority.

All pedestrians, cyclists and drivers of vehicles are vulnerable to poor weather conditions, but there are small steps that can be taken to prevent the likelihood of an accident occurring. It is important to look into road traffic accident claims, if you have been injured in an accident on the road that was not your fault.

Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable as they can be harder to see in dark conditions. When out and about, it is therefore crucial to wear high visibility clothing to increase the chance of being spotted by other road users. To prevent the likelihood of an accident, suitable shoes must also be worn and remaining mindful of any obstacles or particularly dangerous areas.

Cyclists must also wear high visibility clothing to remain noticeable. Ensuring that bikes are prepared for the weather, through steps such as keeping the chain and tyres in good condition, as well as checking that the lights are visible can also reduce risk

Before heading onto the road, drivers can remain safe by following a checklist of items. This checklist includes the actions of checking tyre conditions, heaters, defrosters and windscreen wipers. It is also important to make sure that the lights are working properly and that there is enough antifreeze to combat any potential issues whilst driving.
