This is a fun rhyming book about a snake called Jake who bakes a cake. We are big fans of rhyming in this house, so it was sure to be a hit.

S is enjoying learning to read at the moment so she enjoyed having a go at reading this one herself – although some of the words are tricky, the fact that each line on a page rhymes means she has a chance to take a guess when she’s not sure of the word.

We love that the words are not just neatly in a line under pictures; they wind around the illustrations which are very colourful and cleverly thought-out.

Jake is actually a Californian red-sided garter snake. I love that they’ve not just gone with a generic snake, but instead came up with a version of a real snake – so this can be used when we’re researching snakes on the internet (S has a bit of a fascination at the moment and we’re learning about different kinds of snakes and reptiles after a visit to a pet shop earlier this month).

This is a short book which meant S didn’t run out of steam when attempting to read it for herself. We zoomed through it together, giggling and rhyming as we went. It has already become a firm favourite, being read several times in a row each time it is picked up!

Thanks for reading.
