You could trawl the internet for hours and hours and still not get through all of the interior design tips, tricks and tutorials that are such a foundation of blogs. When it comes to the exterior however, there is a complete dearth of content.
Ten times as many people will see the exterior than the interior. So why do so many of us choose to neglect it? It seems baffling – especially when you consider that the exterior is, more often than not, the only image that is provided for property listings. How are you going to sell your house with a dated and faded exterior? And even if you’re not, why wouldn’t you want to take pride in the outside of your home?
If you are guilty of not showing the front of your home enough love, here are a number of ways you can transform it with ease.
Garden/ Driveway
Landscaping can reportedly increase the value of your home by a generous 7%, making it more than worth the investment of time and money. Start with the obvious – remove unruly weeds, tame overgrown grass, bushes and trees with garden strimmers, shears and a lawnmower. All of these tasks are essential in ensuring your garden looks neat and well-cared for. From there, some added flourishes like flower beds and planters would not go amiss, but are from necessary.
Despite being arguably the most drastic alteration you can make, re-painting your home is by no means the most expensive. I’m not saying it won’t be difficult, but the effort of doing-it-yourself is well worth the monetary saving of hiring a contractor. Whilst the DIY route is the more physically demanding proposition by far, actually deciding which colour to paint your home can be just as big a test of your mental fortitude. Bold, brash and contemporary or subtle, sleek and traditional? As well as your own preferences, it is also important to take your surroundings into account. Generally speaking, matching the trim of nearby buildings allows for superb continuity in the neighbourhood, and variants of pastel hues can be strong for the same reason. Bitumen based paint is waterproof, weatherproof and corrosion resistant, and is built to stand the test of time.
Front Door
Something as a simple as swapping out a front door can have a transformative effect on the look of your home. Its size may pale in comparison to the walls of your home, but I can guarantee you’ll be surprised at how much of a difference it makes. Replacing an awkward and stumpy metal door with a stylishly garnished wooden door can elevate the appearance of your home beyond recognition. It is also important to note that wooden doors require regular maintenance to retain their glossy finish. The lazier amongst you would be better opting for a composite door, which combines the durability of synthetic materials with the visual appeal of wood – not one for the purists though!
By attending to these three issues, you can dramatically alter the look of your house – and add a great deal of value in the process.
