Around this time every year, lots of new workout dvds begin to come out. It seems we’re a predictable bunch, and we all begin to think about getting fit around Christmas. Lots of us will be asking for fitness equipment for Christmas, or making resolutions that 2017 will be the year I lose that spare tyre.

Here are my five highlights of this year’s releases…

Joe Wicks – Lean in 15

We all knew it was coming, didn’t we! This year Joe Wicks has gone from “that bloke off Instagram” to a fitness sensation. He even had his own one-off TV show… which may or may not become a proper series, depending on who you listen to. Either way, it was always a safe bet that he would be bringing out a dvd eventually.

Lean in 15  is released on 26th December, just in time for all of that post-binge resolve to lose weight. It’s available for pre-order now.

Scarlett’s Superslim Me

I’ll be honest; I had to Google this one. Scarlett Moffatt is from TV show Gogglebox, and has lost a shedload of weight – so of course, she has a dvd out. I have mixed feelings about dvds like this. They will always be popular, because people will always relate to the story of a celebrity who lost lots of weight, and want to be like them. But unlike Joe Wicks above, she’s not a fitness professional. Celebrity dvds like this do usually have a trainer involved alongside the celebrity, but I can’t find any information as to whether there is a trainer on this dvd, or who it is. I have bought celebrity workout dvds before which had a great trainer working with them – technically all of Davina McCall’s dvds fall into this category and they work really well. Either way, celebrity workout dvds do tend to be very popular. At the time of writing, Scarlett is rumoured to be taking to the jungle for this season of I’m a Celebrity which I’m sure will serve to make her even more popular!

Superslim Me Plan is released on Boxing Day, but you can pre-order it now and it will turn up on your doorstep just in time for you to dust off your trainers.

Callanetics Countdown: 30 days to a more beautiful body

I was really surprised to see this one; I had a Callanetics book years ago and didn’t realise it was still “a thing.” I find Callanetics to be a much more gentle way of exercising, which is great for people like me (I have diastasis recti and a hernia). Callanetics is kind of a little like Pilates: a series of stretching and contracting exercises to activate muscle groups using very precise movements. I love that there’s a new dvd coming out to counter all of the hectic, shouty, jumpy ones that are always around!

Callanetics Countdown is released on December 26th but available for preorder now. A nice gentle way to get back to fitness!

Zumba Slimdown Party

Zumba is massive and has got a lot of people exercising regularly and losing tons of weight. I’ve been to a few Zumba classes and found them very enjoyable – though I was the one at the back always moving in the wrong direction. The great thing about Zumba is that it’s high-energy dancing where you’re so busy concentrating on the moves and having fun it doesn’t really feel like exercise.

Zumba Slimdown Party is released on December 5th but is available for preorder now. At the time of writing, Amazon has a deal whereby if you preorder Zumba Slimdown Party you can get the 2015 dvd Zumba for £5.99.

Train Like a Cheerleader – Esmee Gummer

If you’ve not heard of Esmee Gummer, I would recommend watching her Ted Talk, Remember, you’ve got you.  Gummer has an amazing story, and aside from inspiring people with her Ted Talk, she’s actually a top UK trainer. In this dvd she shows you how to, well, train like a cheerleader. As well as high intensity cardio workouts, there’s a yoga and stretching cool down section which can be used on its own as a calming routine. I like the idea of this one purely because Esmee Gummer is so inspiring and one of those people who just makes you think, yeah, I can do this!

Train Like a Cheerleader is already on general sale, but it seems to be very popular and selling out in lots of places.

So those were my five highlights of this year’s workout dvd releases. I’m a massive sucker for fitness dvds and will probably buy at least one of these myself. It’s interesting to note that Davina McCall doesn’t seem to have a new dvd release this year but I think that might be because she released a couple of books this year (both of which are on my “to review” list), and has a new TV show. If I’ve missed a workout dvd that you really rate, do leave a comment and let me know!
