Christmas new carI’ve been thinking lately about learning to drive. S has been invited to eleventy birthday parties lately, and while her friend’s mum (my friend) is happy to give us lifts, there have been a couple that S’s friend wasn’t going to. Typically, those are the parties that are out in the middle of nowhere, where you can’t even catch a bus to them, and they’re far from walking distance!

And then there is the issue of the Christmas shopping, and general Christmas shenanigans. There is plenty going on in Salisbury, but I’d love to be able to just take S out to the Christmas shop we went to the other week, or to Christmas things going on in other towns. I can’t really do that, unless I pre-arrange it with my mum or a friend.

So I’ve been toying with the idea of learning to drive. A couple of people have offered to help with lessons, so the main concern is buying the actual car. I’ve actually been to a few places to look at cars, but I think I’m going to need car finance in order to afford it.

This is the bit where all the car-savvy people ask me what make/model of car I’ll get, and I reply err… a red one? I’m not bothered by whether it’s the latest model or goes super fast; all I really want is a car that’s reliable and safe and has space in the boot for a scooter, perhaps a bike or other small child paraphernalia as well as shopping.

Basically, we’ll be needing a big boot, comfy seats, a music system that will stream podcasts… and an engine. Also I’m thinking that since I’m quite forgetful when it comes to “where did we park the car” I need a car in an unusual colour. My mum’s car is silver; even when there are only 5 cars in the car park I still can’t pick hers out if there’s another silver one there. Actually, now I think about it, S gets really excited whenever she sees an orange car. Before she discovered pink, orange was her favourite colour. So perhaps we’ll have an orange car!

Do this deffinetly! As nerve wracking as lessons are and knowing your about to have a test (meeeee in a few weeks) it will be worth it. My reason for doing it is being able to take my son out at the drop of a hat.
