caribbean-getaway

S and I have not had a holiday this year… actually, now that I stop to think about it I’ve not had a proper holiday since that time in 2010 when I disappeared to Benidorm alone for a few days.

The weather has been fairly rainy and pants lately, and between that and the realisation I’ve not had a holiday for five years, I’ve been spending my downtime dreaming about holidays. And of course, if you’re going to dream about holidays (or anything, really) then it’s best to dream big.

So here is my plan. S and I are going on a luxury holiday to the Caribbean. For two weeks… actually, make that three. We’re going to build sand castles and spend lazy days on the beach messing around and drinking fancy (non alcoholic) cocktails.

We’ll see waterfalls and rainforests and visit local towns, maybe go out on a boat to spot some humpback whales. It’ll be positively educational for my little pickle!

There are several islands in the Caribbean; I think first of all (obviously this is the first of several holidays) we’ll head to Aruba. For a start, Aruba lies outside of the hurricane belt. It also has a fairly dry climate without much rain. As I look out my window at the puddles below, the idea of a place with little rain sounds fabulous! The island is actually technically a part of the Netherlands and apparently the capital, Oranjestad, is a sight to behold with brightly coloured buildings and beautiful gabled roofs. I love to see different cultures when I go abroad, and this sounds like such a great place to see Caribbean influences mixed with Dutch – what a great combination!

The interior of the island hosts Arikok National Park with cacti, iguanas and two species of bird that are only found on the island – and nowhere else in the entire world!

I like the idea of finding a place that’s a bit off the beaten path, so that we’re not on a really crowded beach. We’ll need space to perfect our sand castle making, after all. There’s a beach on the western coast called Druif which is apparently quite small and quiet with only a few restaurants and hotels but miles of beautiful beach. That sounds ideal.

The island is tiny, and at its widest point is only 10km across. I like the idea of being able to just take a walk from one side of the island to the other and see what’s going on.

Aruba gets year-round sunshine, so it definitely sounds like my kind of place. I’m so over all this rain! Apparently, temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees. Just imagine three weeks without having to find a pair of socks or a hoodie… Actually, just to be on the safe side, maybe we should make it a four-week holiday!
