If you read my post yesterday, you’ll know that I love Instagram – and also that it’s an amazing social network that’s really active, and growing really quickly. It’s a great place to find like minded people, to get inspiration, to keep in touch with how people look or how their children look – or whatever else! It’s very visual, so I find it’s much easier to scroll through and look at when I’m feeling a little too lazy for reading Facebook or Twitter updates!

So what do you do on Instagram? Post a picture, right? Maybe with a filter, a couple of hashtags? Well, yes. But here are five other things you can try on Instagram today that might just help you to grow your followers and shine on Instagram…

1. Post Something Different

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed I post a lot of photos! And most of those photos are of my daughter. But when I post a photo of something else – almost anything else – I tend to get a lot more likes and comments! People like to see something different on their timelines. Indulge them, and they’ll probably reward you! If you can’t find anything suitably different to post, experiment with filters and the other bits and bobs available on Instagram instead!

2. Add a Location… That’s Not a Location!

When you post your photo, there’s an option to “add to map.” You can usually choose from a few locations local to you, or you can “Name This Location.” When you click through to name your location, you would normally begin to type in where you are… but you can also just type in a call to action or a random comment. Why would you do that? Because the location appears in blue text above the photo. It stands out more because you don’t see it above most Instagram photos. If you’re promoting a new product or have something you want to bring to people’s attention, put it in that box.

3. Send a Direct Photo!

If you want to connect with someone, but you don’t have their phone number… and you want to make sure you get their attention, send them a direct photo on Instagram! Yeah, yeah, I know the It Works wrap people have this sewn up in the most irritating way possible – but it’s still a great way to get in contact with someone, and to do something that’s really going to grab their attention.

4. Follow Some Suggested Accounts

If you follow someone, and you love their account, go to their profile and click the green arrow next to the “following” button. It will suggest three more people you can follow. And when you follow them, new suggested accounts will pop up. Why would you do that? To connect with more people, silly!

5. Get Iconosquare

Everyone loves stats, right? Tell me it’s not just me! Iconosquare will give you all sorts of wonderful stats about your Instagram account, including the average number of likes and comments your posts are getting, your most used filter, your follower growth, your most engaged followers. These are all useful things if you’re trying to grow your Instagram.

I am loving Instagram at the moment, and working to grow my following legitimately, without buying followers or getting genuine but unengaged followers. I’d love to know if you have any great tips for doing that! Share your knowledge!

I love Instagram! Great tips here. I like the one about adding a different location and the one about posting something different. I think I shall be experimenting with these. Thanks!
