wishful holiday thinking

The weather is a bit rubbish lately, isn’t it. Apparently it’s Il Nino, but depending on which daily rag you read, we’re still in for a scorcher of a heat wave Summer. Or an Indian Summer. Or some sort of freak heat wave in December. The newspapers like to give us hope, don’t they!

When the weather is a bit pants, I like to window shop for holidays. It sounds weird, but I read somewhere that looking for holidays can actually have just as much benefit as going on them. Kind of in the same way that browsing jobs online can make you feel better about your current situaiton – just knowing you have options makes it a little easier to bear.

I’ve not had a proper holiday since 2010, when I was mid-breakdown and decided a few days in Spain might cheer me up. They didn’t, and I don’t remember much of it so I’m not even sure it could count as a holiday.

This evening, I was thinking about the hottest, most luxurious place I could think of. Blue skies with seas to match, all inclusive, golden sands. That’s my idea of a great holiday; I’m not one for mountain climbing and all that malarkey; I want to lay on a sun lounger and swim in a pool, maybe walk on the beach.

One of S’s friends is leaving nursery this Summer; her parents are both teachers and have the opportunity to go and teach in Abu Dhabi for a couple of years. If I’m honest, I’m beyond jealous. What an amazing opportunity! When I heard about it, I decided to take a look at Abu Dhabi online, and investigate the Middle East in general. It’s not somewhere I had ever thought of going on holiday before but… wow.

So I’m broadening my wishful thinking horizons. Instead of looking for European sunshine holidays, my daydreams are travelling further afield. As I rummage through my wardrobe for the hoodies I packed away last week when I thought it was Summer, I’m dreaming of an all inclusive holiday in the sunshine with champagne cocktails… and S swimming in the pool beside me, obviously!
