weekly weigh in #8

This week has been tough, but then I suppose I knew giving up a massive sugar habit was never going to be easy! I’ve had ups and downs, but I’m finding my real weakness is S; she still asks for ice creams and sugary drinks, and I find it really hard to say no to her. I need to think of a way around it because I can’t just not go near any shops while she’s with me!

Goal for last week

Last week’s goal was to knock the sugar on the head once and for all. Sadly, I have to say I’ve failed. I’m fine if there’s none in the house – but if there is, it calls to me from the kitchen after S’s bed time. This week she insisted on buying ice lollies on the way home from nursery, and so there are these little ice cream lolly things sitting in the freezer… and a few have escaped! That said, I have managed to leave it until well into the evening before caving, and I’ve avoided all other sugar throughout the day.

This weekend I did clear out the kitchen cupboards, and put all of my cake making stuff into bags for my sister. Once she picks it up, and S has eaten the lollies in the freezer, this house is a sugar free zone!

Goal for this week

This week’s goal is to do more proper exercise. The program I’m signed up to on New Me has me doing exercise routines twice a week, as well as walking. I’ve been getting most of the walking in, but I keep skipping the routines – which is ridiculous, because they only take a few minutes. Also if I don’t do my ab exercises my hernia really plays up, and it is only a couple of days before I look properly bloated and pregnant.

This week I managed both of my scheduled workouts but the day I was supposed to go for a long walk was a day I was working literally from the moment I dropped S at nursery to the time I collected her. I do think I managed to pack in a fair bit of walking on the other days though, including our morning at the farm which included pushing a toddler-filled buggy up and down a very steep hill twice. For me I think the most important thing is to do my ab exercises; I need to make sure my hernia isn’t getting out of control.

Recording what I’m eating on New Me┬áhas made me a lot more mindful of what I’m eating, but also really surprised me. Before when I’ve done this sort of thing, I’ve come to the end of the day and found that I’m well over my suggested calorie limit. This time, it’s the other way around. I think with money being tight since S was born I’ve just become used to eating less. I’ve always struggled with breakfast any way, but I’m finding now that breakfast or not, I’m struggling to eat enough calories in my day.

I’m not really a big believer in the whole “burn more than you eat” thing; I’ve read too much that contradicts it. I’m more concerned that I’m just not allowing myself enough fuel to get through the day, and that can have other effects I’d rather avoid. So I need to work on eating more – but of the right things. Vegetables and protein, mainly.

Weight & Measurements

Weight: 165lb Last week: 167lb.
Neck: 14″ same as last week
Bust: 36.5″ same as last week
Waist: 34.5″ same as last week
Hips: 39″ Same as last week
R&L Thigh: 23″/23″ Same as last week
R&L Calf: 14.5″/14.5″ Same as last week

Woo hoo! Two pounds off! I feel like I’m heading in the right direction, finally! I’m not really surprised my measurements have not changed; I’ve not kept up with my exercises and frankly I’m just relieved not to have put a couple of inches back on to my waist with the amount my hernia has been playing up!

I’m really trying to cut down on my refined sugar intake – it is so hard! I find dried fruit (dried without sugar) and things like maple syrup really help to get curb a sugar craving #bloggingtojogging

Thanks Rebecca. Unfortunately I’m avoiding fructose, not just refined sugar – and lots of dried fruits are up to 70% fructose. I think maple syrup is about 35% too so both are off limits. As a general rule of thumb, if it tastes sweet I’m not supposed to eat it – with the rare exception of a piece of fruit where the fructose is in its original form, surrounded by fibre.

Thanks, once my sister collects these bags of sugary stuff from the house, I’ll be fine… in theory!

Congratulations on the lbs off! I think as long as some is coming off and you feel like you’re making progress that’s great. I can imagine how hard kicking that sugar is, I’m not sure I could do it! Good luck for the coming week. xx

Thanks Morgan, I think I’m over the worst of it but the first few days were tough!

A completely sugar free diet so hard and as a dietitian I would never manage it either!! I think as long as you normally eat well and exercise a few sugary treats are fine. Life is too short! Good luck and see you next week xx

    Vicky Charles · 22/04/2015 at 17:01

Thanks Sarah but the things I’ve been reading about sugar lead me to think otherwise – am trying to cut it out completely. It’s hard because it’s added to so many foods, but I’m getting there!

Well done! You look slimmer in your pic too! :)

    You think so? Thanks!!

I learned my lesson a long time ago not to take L shopping with me, I now wait until she is at school. I can speed around, get everything I need and keep the treats to a minimum. Sounds like you are getting on well with New Me, have to admit I am struggling with it as I have a set exercise routine. Will try and get on track with it.
Well done on the 2lbs – a fantastic weight loss chick! :) Hope you are having a fab week! Sim #WeightLossWednesday xx

Yay for two pounds off!! Glad you’re seeing some progress lovely and please don’t beat yourself up over the sugar thing, as long as you’re not binging on it and you’re having healthy stuff like the veg and protein as you mentioned then you will get there. Thanks for linking up with #BloggingToJogging xx

Thanks Hannah. I feel like cutting out that last bit of sugar is the final hurdle.
