For those who are not aware, this year I am embarking on a happiness project. In January, I sang every day with S. In February, I attempted to address my health and fitness, and last month I worked on gratitude.
I must admit, for April I was having trouble thinking of something – so I asked Facebook, of course! People came up with some really reat suggestions but the one that really resonated with me was the idea of saying “hi” or “good morning” to people on the street.
I used to do this all the time, but seem to have fallen out of the habit.
A couple of weeks ago was International Day of Happiness, and the theme this year was to connect with the people around us. I live in the centre of a city and must walk past hundreds of people every day, but we all rarely make eye contact or engage with each other and actually that’s quite sad, isn’t it?
I bet all of us see the same faces on our way to work in the morning, every single day. The same faces at the bus stop, the same faces in the supermarket, the same faces on our walk to the office. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all acknowledged the fact we see each other every day, and started saying hello to each other?
My challenge for this month is to say “good morning” or “hello” to at least one person every day (friends don’t count), and see what happens – whether it brightens my mood. I’m hopeful that more interaction with real life humans can only be a good thing!
