I am two weeks into my health and fitness challenge for February. For those who are not aware, I am embarking on a 12-month Happiness Project, with a different challenge each month designed to brighten my mood. My challenge for February is to work on my health and fitness. That’s not necessarily to say I intend to lose loads of weight or run a marathon or start lifting massive weights; I just want to be more active and eat a more healthy diet.

Two weeks down

After everything I said last week about needing to make time for exercise… that sort of went to pot. I’m finding it hard but I know it’s something I need to work on. I do feel a lot more sprightly this week though, and at the weekend I even managed to start using a different notch on my belt!

Last week I set myself a goal to exercise at least three times – and I managed it, but only just! I still need to work on fitting the exercise into my day/week. On Sunday, I had forgotten to top up our electricity key, and by the time I realised we should probably do something about that, the one shop in town that does such a thing on a Sunday was long since closed. The only place to go was on the other side of a rather steep hill… so I put S into the buggy, and we went for a walk. She insisted on walking part of the way up the hill, and then we went for a little walk on the way home. It was a really lovely little walk and made me think we should do more of them, as the weather (hopefully) improves.

On the way back from our walk, we passed a gym that I’d always known was there, but had sort of forgotten about. It’s changed hands a few times over the years and I’d not heard anything about it for a while so I suppose I figured it had closed down. It is literally around the corner from us, and when I looked it up online I found that it’s only £15 a month to be a member. I joined the local leisure centre a few months ago, but it was a 30-minute walk away, so with all the good will in the world I rarely found time to go there – because walking there and back added an hour to the workout that I just couldn’t justify spending away from my work. People have told me the gym around the corner is very small and cramped, but I think the fact it’s so close to me will hopefully cancel out the lack of mod cons or massive TVs on the wall… I’m hoping to go and have a look around soon.

Healthy Eating

Last week I set myself a goal to drink more water… but I think I’ve actually managed to drink a lot less water this week, and I don’t even know why! My eating has been a bit hit and miss, and I’ve eaten a lot more chocolate than I would have liked. I think I’m just stuck in that rut of “I’ve had a crappy day; I deserve some chocolate.” And I’ve had a lot of crappy days lately, for one reason or another. I need to find something else to buy as a “treat” when I’m wandering around the shop after a bad day.

Thinking Slimmer

Despite what I’ve just said about my eating, I do think my Slimpod has improved my eating habits. More than once this week, I gave myself permission to get take away. I even opened a window for Just Eat on my laptop, and then… I just didn’t order it. I haven’t eaten as many fruits and vegetables as I would like, but things are heading in the right direction.

Weight & Measurements

Considering I’ve not made much of an effort, I think I’ve done okay on the weight & measurements front:

Weight: Last week: 12st 1lb. This week: 12st 1lb = no loss this week. 1lb lost overall.
Bust: Last week: 39″ This week: 38″ = 1 inch lost this week; 2 inches overall
Waist: Last week: 36.5″ This week: 35.5″ = 1 inch lost this week; 1.5 inches overall
Hips: Last week: 40″ This week: 40″ = no loss this week; 1 inch lost overall
Thigh: Last week: 24″ This week: 24″ = no change
Calf: Last week: 14.5″ This week: 14.5″ = no loss this week; half an inch lost overall

I didn’t lose any weight this week, but I did lose 3 inches, bringing me to a total of 5.5 inches off over all. I’m happy with that!

Just a quick note about these measurements: I have an umbilical hernia, which means that aside from the flab around my middle, there is a lump there. My main hope through all of this is that I can strengthen my abdominal muscles and stop the hernia from being quite so painful and lumpy. One inch off in a week is a massive thing for me, especially considering my hernia was playing up for 2 days and I was unable to do much.

My lovely chart hasn’t changed much, with only one pound lost:

Is It Making Me Happy?

On Sunday, our plans changed at the last minute, and we had S’s friend over for lunch. As I walked back across town with one toddler in the buggy and another plodding along beside me on reins, I’ll admit to thinking “what the heck have I let myself in for…” but actually, we had a great time. When Janey left, I felt like I used to feel after a trip to the gym – that sort of angelic “just done some exercise, never touching chocolate again” feeling. We went out for a walk later that day, and when we came home we both were just really chilled out and happy.

I had forgotten that exercising and eating better can help you to feel better. When you’re tired and fed up, the last thing you want to do is go for a run or walk but actually the times I’ve managed to make myself do that, I’ve felt better within minutes!

Healthy eating and exercise do make such a difference
I used to comfort eat terribly as very much an emotional eater – think the anti-depressants changed that really
I love your ambition and ability to seize life – you are quite a woman and I am thrilled to see you linking up to Muffin Top Monday on my blog

The inch loss far outweighs anything the scales could tell you – shows that you are really toning up which is fantastic! Even housework is a form of exercise so you will be doing more than you think on a weekly basis! Hope you are having a good week and thank you for joining in with #WeightLossWednesday Sim x

What a great idea, better health and fitness does increase your mood so I’m glad you’ve seen the postice effects that exercise can have. Well done, it’s changing your body shape already which is equally as important as Weightloss so keep up the good work!

Walking has been my lifeline since having Toby, I genuinely believe it’s held PND back from really getting at me. How about Nakd bars for alternative snacks? Or Graze Box deliveries? I love mine! Thanks for linking up with #BloggingToJogging xx
