5 things you need to know this week

Hello and welcome to another fun-filled week on the South Coast.

You can listen to this week’s bit here:

Kaiser Chiefs at the BIC – Tuesday 10th
Having headlining the John Peel stage at Glastonbury last year as well as storming set at T In the Park, the Kaiser Chiefs are off on tour! They only started this tour at the end of last week, so they’re likely to be pretty lively and full of beans. I’ve never been to a Kaiser Chiefs gig, but some of my friends have and apparently they’re one of those bands who can really do the whole live thing quite well.
Fun fact about Ricky Wilson – he’s not just a music panel show favourite and one-time judge on The Voice, he was also in St Trinians 2 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Bit of an all-rounder, our Ricky!

Glow in The Park – Wednesday 11th
We were just saying last week that we have some fantastic races here on the south coast, and this is definitely not something you see every day. This is basically a run around Southampton Common, in the dark. There’s a 5km or 10km option, and you can enter as a team if you like. Being dark, it’s probably  not one for achieving a PB, but it’s good fun and if you’re training for another race this one is a bit more interesting than your standard plod around the park. They do recommend you wear a head torch, what with it being dark and all – don’t rely on the fact others will be wearing one, because you’ll want to be able to see your own feet, not theirs!

The Bodyguard at the Mayflower – Thursday 12th
The Bodyguard musical is going on tour, and its first stop is the Mayflower. Alexandra Burke has proved she’s more than just a reality singing show star by joining the cast in the lead role, and has received some rave reviews. And let’s not forget, the character was played by Whitney Houston in the movie – if ever there was a tough act to follow, she would be it. The show is only at the Mayflower u the 28th, and it’s worth noting that Burke will not be performing any matinees – in these she will be replaced by Zoe Birkett, another Cowell show star, who has been in a whole host of massive shows including Thriller Live. They’ve built a new set for the tour during the down time they’ve had since the run ended at the Adelphi at the end of August. The Bodyguard soundtrack was originally released back in 1992, but remains the best-selling soundtrack album of all time, with over 45 million copies sold.
Did you know… Whitney Houston had originally planned to record What Becomes of the Broken Hearted as the theme song for The Bodyguard. Can you imagine the movie or the soundtrack being so successful without her cover of I Will Always Love You?

Fifty Shades of Grey – Friday 13th
Unlucky for some, Friday 13th has been chosen as the opening night for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie – obviously because it preceded Valentine’s weekend, and they’re hoping to make a killing. Personally I think it’s a load of badly-written nonsense that glorifies abusive relationships but other people seem to like it. EL James has certainly made a killing from what originally started as Twilight fanfic.
There’s been a lot of hoo-har over the movie and who plays the lead roles. After numerous rumours, the stars were finally revealed as Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. Dornan has apparently had to learn how to walk differently for the part – because he walks more on his toes than his heels… and obviously, Christian Grey walks on his heels. Obviously.
I’m sure the movie will do well because it’s based on such a popular series of books but since its subject matter is not something they’ll likely be able to show too much of on the screen, this might be one of those things where the fans come away saying the book was better than the film – after all, imagination is always better than anything that can be manufactured.
You may have detected I have a fairly low opinion of the whole shebang. Besides the books are poorly written fanfic, I think it glorifies abusive behaviour as some sort of holy grail in relationships. This is not about the S&M in the movie, but more about Grey’s actions in it. This article explains it better than I am able, but it reminds me of the scene in Untamed Heart where Marisa Tomei wakes up and Christian Slater has broken into her bedroom to bring her a Christmas tree or something. We all swoon about how romantic it is; but essentially this is a man she doesn’t know who has broken into her bedroom to sit watching her sleep. If it weren’t Christian Slater, it would be a very different movie, no? Same with Christian Grey in my eyes. Even with him being rich and owning a helicopter and all the rest of it, it’s still a man rocking up at her house without her ever telling him where she lives. It’s still a man threatening to beat the crap out of her if she doesn’t do as she’s told. That’s not S&M. It’s abuse.

Casablanca Screening – Saturday 14th
I love this one because it’s not your usual hearts and flowers con. The No. 6 cinema at Portsmouth dockyard is one of the few independent cinemas – which means they get to choose the movies they show. While every other cinema in the country – possibly the world – is showing Fifty Shades, No. 6 have opted for (in my humble opinion) a much better choice of Valentine’s Day movie: Casablanca. The venue is about a hundred times more romantic than any out of town shopping centre cinema – it’s an old boat house, built in 1846. But it also has the biggest screen on the south coast, with 275 seats! I love that there are still indies going and showing something a bit different from the same five movies you can see in any cinema in the country, sitting on the same seats, with the same snacks and the same ads before the film. I’ve actually never seen Casablanca so I might just pop along and play gooseberry on Saturday night!
One bit of useless trivia for you: most of the actors playing Nazis in the movie were actually German Jews who had escaped from Nazi Germany.

Well, that’s us done for another week. Thanks for reading/listening and I’ll be back again next week with another 5 things.

I’m totally with you on the 50 Shades anti-hype, I started to read it a few weeks ago after being recommended by a few people; I got to page 12 and I had to put it down when I saw I would be reading about a sex-crazed, adopted control freak……. I knew then I wouldn’t be reading the book with the name Christian, but with my ex’s name :\

My sister is also in agreement, that it’s just full of romanticised rape!

I’ll confess I don’t know much about the whole S&M scene, but I’ve heard that people who are into that sort of thing are not happy with the way it’s portrayed in the books – it gives them a bad name!

Gosh, interesting to hear your take on the 50 Shades of Grey, as we moved last week I sort of missed all the hoo-har! I’ve never bothered to read the book, although I don’t mind the odd bit of, erm, reading porn (do I want to admit this? Haha!) it’s never really appealed! So, I’ll most probably give the film a miss too, or watch it in the comfort of my own home when it goes on sky movies…!

Thanks for linking up to #TheList, some interesting things in there! xxx
