For those who don’t know, I do a weekly bit on Wave 105 telling you five things you need to know this week. If you’d like to listen in, it’ll be on just after 10 this evening. In the meantime, here are some more details about those five things…
Madness at the BIC, Tuesday 9th
These are their first gigs Madness have done since their date at Alexandra Palace last September. They are always popular though and their tours are still wildly successful. They seem to be diversifying the Madness brand now, and have two beers out, called Gladness and Night Boat. My first gig was actually watching Madness at the BIC in December in the early ’90s. I’d quite like to go back and see them play every Christmas! Did you know, the sax on One Step Beyond was actually out of tune, because their sax player didn’t know how to tune it. Nobody cared though because it’s an epic tune!
Aladdin at the Southsea Kings Theatre, Tuesday 9th
We’re well and truly into panto season for this year and the Kings Theatre in Southsea has a cracker. Aladdin featuring Anthony Costa as Aladdin, fresh from the Big Reunion with Blue. There’s also Jade Ellis from X Factor and Marcus Patrick from Hollyoaks. Kitty Brucknell is Princess Yasmin… if you don’t remember her, she’s the bonkers one from the year Little Mix won. I reckon she’ll make a good panto princess!
The panto runs until 4th January, so make sure you get your tickets. There are also some relaxed performances, and some signed for the hard of hearing
Christmas Jumper Day, Friday 12th
This is something that’s pretty new, and only in its third year; the idea is that we all wear a Christmas jumper and donate money to Save the Children. Since the charity started doing this, all the major stores have started stocking Christmas jumpers – and some of them even do “classy” ones that don’t look tacky… but seriously, where’s the fun in that? You need polyester, googly eyes, bright colours and flashing lights where possible. Of course, my daughter has the best Christmas jumper, as you can see here.
Cinderella at the Mayflower, Saturday 13th
Yay, another panto! I actually really like panto, it’s an integral part of the holiday season – especially if you have kids. Cinderella at the Mayflower has Brian Conley as Buttons and Gok Wan as the Fairy Gokmother. You can hear interviews with them on Wave entertainment news from tomorrow, and of course Brian Conley was a huge success in last year’s Mayflower panto, where he flew over the audience in a magic car… there are loads more effects this year too.Conley is a seasoned professional, and Gok earned his panto stripes last year in Snow White in Birmingham, so you’re definitely in for a treat with this show.
The End of Mission Christmas, Sunday 14th
The Wave 105 campaign to bring Christmas to children across the south who otherwise couldn’t afford it, is coming to an end. They need Christmas presents for 54,000 children this year. There are 150 drop-off points across the region, and if you can’t get to one of the points you can always donate some cash through the website. The campaign ends next weekend so hurry up if you’re planning to donate!
