The best part about Christmas when I worked in a big office was Secret Santa. Our entire floor would get together to buy bonkers gifts for each other. We would all crowd around as one of the managers played Santa, giving out presents. It was always fun to pick names out of a hat, then secretly research the person whose name you’d chosen, trying to find a good present for them.
Tomorrow I’m off to a client’s Christmas party, and we’re doing Secret Santa too. There’s an added layer to this, as I don’t know any of the people in the office too well! It’s been fun trying to think of a gift; it might be interesting to see people opening their gifts!
These days more and more people seem to be opting for Secret Santa. It’s no longer just offices; families and friendship groups are getting in on the act too. This Secret Santa Survey shows that these days only 42% of Secret Santas are in the office.
I love Secret Santa because it forces you to really think about what you’re buying. Whether it’s for family, friends or coworkers, if you’ve a set budget to stick to it means you have to think about it, and be more creative than just heading out to the shops to get something -especially if you want to give the person a gift they’ll actually be pleased to receive.
I’ve a friend who does Secret Santa with her family and they all go to great lengths to get brilliant gifts for each other. I think that doing Secret Santa brings some of the magic back to Christmas once we’re adults.
